Strategy Group Summary:
Retail Strategy Group: Road shows were held in our shops to explain our vision of improvement to our volunteers. A Retail
Manager was appointed to take overall charge of our shops alongside two part-time store managers. Due to this we have
already seen an increase in revenue and we are now looking to appoint a third manager. New guidelines and policies have
been introduced and plans for an upgrade to card swipe and cyber tills are underway.
Fundraising & Marketing Strategy Group: The group has been reviewing the current fundraising activities and identified
potential areas for growth. A marketing strategy for the Hospice is being developed with the aim of raising awareness of
our services in addition to fundraising activities. Focus of the groups will shortly turn to our 30th Birthday celebrations which
will take place in 2017.
Hospice Service Strategy Group: An action plan has been developed to review all hospice services with the aim of improving
service user experiences. The group aims to grow, support and develop the clinical services workforce. Our Daycare service
has reduced from 5 days per week to 4 while we conduct a review of the service.
More information on the work of the strategy groups can be viewed in our annual review which is available online at

What is Palliative Care?
Palliative care
(pronounced pal-lee-uh-tiv)
is specialised medical care for people with serious
illnesses.
It focuses on providing relief from the symptoms and
stress of a serious illness.
The goal is to improve quality of life for both the
patient and the family.
A word from our chairman,
Welcome to the latest edition of the St. Clare’s Hospice Newsletter which includes some exciting details of our planned fundraising
events, news from our retail stores and of course the latest news from our Day Care and In-Patient services. During the past year
we have recruited a new board of trustees who have developed three new strategy groups with the aim of highlighting areas for
improvement and spreading the word about the wonderful work our medical and nursing team do in providing specialist palliative
care to people in the area suffering with life-limiting illnesses.
A summary of the work the groups are undertaking across
Retail, Fundraising and Hospice services is detailed below.
Trustees and staff have been contributing their skills and
expertise, working together to strengthen the Hospice for
the future. As we move towards 2017 our thoughts are
turning towards our 30th Birthday - it’s hard to believe we
have been providing care in South Tyneside for 30 years!
We will begin planning our celebrations over the coming
months and would love to hear from you if you have any
special memories or photographs from years gone by.
I hope you enjoy reading about our latest updates and
look forward to updating you on our 30th Birthday plans
in our next edition!
Kind Regards
Enid Apsey
