St. Claires Hospice - Annual Review 2015 - page 10

The Hospice has two Lymphoedema clinics, one based at the
Hospice and the other in Cleadon Park Primary Care Centre,
South Shields. This service provides assessment and treatment
for patients with mild uncomplicated Lymphoedema through
to complex cases. Although this service currently only runs
over 2.5 days we are hopeful that this can be expanded in the
near future.
Our Physiotherapy service is available over 4 days per week
and provides treatment to In-Patients and Day Care but also has
an out-patient service and outreach to community patients.
Physiotherapy plays an important role in patient pain and
symptom management and includes treatments such as:
Fatigue management
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
Rehabilitation
Exercise programmes
Acupuncture
This year has seen the introduction of a daily circuit class within
the Hospice gym, which has been well attended by Day Care
patients and out-patients. Feedback from those using the
regular timetabled programme, has led to much improvement
in physical and psychological well-being.The development of
walking groups and falls prevention programmes is also hoped
for the future pending the successful development of a Macmillan
sponsored physiotherapy assistant post.
