St. Clare’s take’s important steps
towards incorporation…
Following a formal resolution passed by its members at our Annual General
Meeting in July 2014, St. Clare’s began the process of preparing and submitting
its application to establish a new Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO)
with the UK Governing body the Charity Commission.
Being a CIO has several benefits over the unincorporated alternative, such as:
•
The trustees are usually personally safeguarded from the financial liabilities
the charity incurs, which is not normally the case for unincorporated charities.
•
The charity has a legal personality of its own, enabling it to conduct business
in its own name, rather than the name of the trustees. Without this Trustees could
potentially be personally liable if someone was to sue the charity.
On 3rd December 2014, St. Clare’s Hospice received notification from the
Charity Commission that their application had been successful and the new
CIO had been established. Our official name remains St. Clare’s Hospice but it
has a new registered charity number of 1159481.
At the first Board of Trustees meeting of the new charity held on 17th December
2014, the decision was taken to transfer the assets, including staff, property,
contracts and grants from the original charity to the new one, as of the 1st
April 2015. The next stage of the process is that at an agreed point in time
approximately six months from now, the original charity (Registration No:
515095) will be wound up.
The new charity number will be the only visible sign of the change in legal
status and the important thing to remember is that we are still a charity and ‘it’s
business as usual’.

Annual General
Meeting
Our AGM will take place on Tuesday
14th July 2015 at 6pm at South
Shields Town Hall. All welcome.
Rolling out the red carpet!
A South Shields lady, who is a Day Care Patient at St.
Clare’s, celebrated turning 99 in style as she was picked
up by limousine and greeted by her fellow guests and staff
who rolled out the red carpet for her as she arrived at the
Hospice!
Jenny Scott, who has been attending Day Care at the
Hospice every Thursday for the past two years, has Chronic
Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) which has led to a
decline in her mobility in recent months.
When Hospice driver Ian Gowens arrived in a limousine,
wearing his tuxedo to take Jenny to the Hospice, she was
amazed. The surprises then continued when her friends
from the Thursday Day Care group and members of staff,
greeted Jenny at the door with the red carpet. She then had
a birthday party at Tavistock in South Shields, which opened
its doors especially for Jenny. Unknown to Jenny, the whole
party had been planned by her friends and staff at the Hospice. Hospice fundraising staff got on-board to go the extra mile for the
birthday girl’s special day and arranged to borrow a red carpet from the Quality Hotel in Boldon.
Following a call to help on Facebook to see if our supporters could help us to source a limo, we were amazed by the response.
Our post was shared over 200 times reaching 13,000 people. We never expected so many people willing to help and support us
to come forward; it really does show how amazing our community support is! Local charity Community Corner thought spoiling
Jenny was a great idea and offered support to help make her day special. Gateshead Central Taxi’s came forward and offered
their limo free of charge.
