St. Claires Hospice - Spring & Summer 2015 Newsletter - page 10

St. Clare’s has recently set up a new Voluntary Befriending
Service to offer support and friendship to those affected
by a life – limiting illness and who are socially isolated.
The service is staffed by a team of Befriending volunteers
and managed by a Befriending Co-ordinator, they have all
been fully trained in order for them to carry out their roles.
All of our volunteers and staff also have to undergo a
Disclosure and Barring Service check if they are working
with vulnerable adults.
The team have varying different backgrounds, some of
them were already volunteering in a different area with
St Clare’s and wanted the opportunity to be part of this
new service.
We probably all know someone who could benefit from
having some extra company or support so what exactly
will our befriending volunteers be doing?
Visit once a week for up to two hours
Provide company and conversation
Read a novel or newspaper with the person
Help with practical tasks such as writing letters
Provide emotional support
Accompany the person to medical appointments or local outings or events
Encourage a wider network of contacts
Anyone interested in accessing this service needs to be referred in the first instance by a Health Professional who is involved
with their care. They will then be matched to a suitable volunteer taking into account their particular interests and needs.
To find out more about this service, please contact the Befriending Co-ordinator on 0191 451 6378 or if you are interested in
volunteering, please contact Sandra Burrell, HR Manager on 0191 451 6378.
