Leaving a lasting legacy…
Each year we receive gifts from supporters which they
have left to us in their Will. Over the years we have
received some very generous gifts but no matter how
big or small, leaving a legacy to a charity can have a
lasting effect.
A legacy is a gift you leave in a Will which will only be
paid once you pass away. There are lots of different
ways to leave a legacy to St. Clare’s; you can choose
to give a specific amount e.g. £100. You can also leave
a specific gift such as a painting or piece of jewellery or
you can leave the remainder of your estate, known as
the residue, once all of your other specified gifts have
been distributed.
Leaving a legacy sounds like a very daunting prospect, many people believe they have to have thousands of pounds to
be able to leave a gift. The truth is that over the years we have received legacies worth anything from £20 to £400,000.
Each legacy received by St. Clare’s helps us to continue providing care to the people in our local area who need our help.
Often people believe they have nothing to give but usually that is not the case. A solicitor can advise you how to leave a
legacy to St. Clare’s after you have considered any gifts you would like to leave to your family or friends.
We are grateful for each and every person who chooses to remember St. Clare’s with a legacy which is such a special gift to
leave after you have gone. If you are considering leaving a legacy please contact a local solicitor with a copy of our Legacy
leaflet which can be requested by contacting a member of the Fundraising Team on 0191 451 6400.
If you have already made a Will you can add a gift to St. Clare’s by drawing up a codicil (simple addition to your Will). We
can provide you with a codicil form. Simply complete, and then send it to your solicitor who should not charge you for
adding it to your existing Will.
You probably already know the usual ways St. Clare’s raises funds to continue our work in the local area via things like
donations, sponsored events such as our Boxing Day Dip and through our community activities. We also receive gifts from
our supporters in their Will which are known as legacies.
