Day Care celebrate
VE Day
Family carry on Nanna’s legacy
of supporting St. Clare’s
Eleven family members from three generations joined together
to take part in our Rainbow Run, at Monkton Stadium in
June, in memory of Lily Allon - a passionate supporter of the
Hospice.
The late Lily, 87, from Brockley Whins, South Shields, began
fundraising for St. Clare’s after we cared for her husband who
died of cancer years earlier.
Marie Campbell, Fundraising Manager, said: “Mrs Allon, as she
was always known to me, was one of the first supporters I met
when I came to work at St. Clare’s back in 2004. She would
ring me up and I would go round to her house to collect the
beautiful toys she had knitted for us to sell to raise funds.
“Mrs Allon was a lovely lady and her family were her world. I am sure that she would have been so proud to know that
they are continuing to fundraise on her behalf.”
Last year Lily was sadly diagnosed with four cancerous tumours and passed away months later. Her death left her family
devastated but determined to do something to honour her memory. Last summer the family held a fundraising day in their
back garden inviting family and friends and raised an amazing £450!
This year the eleven family members ran together in the Rainbow Run. Joanne Milne, Lily’s granddaughter, said: “As it
was fast approaching Nanna’s one year anniversary, we wanted to do something in her memory. She was always a big
supporter of St. Clare’s Hospice, collecting jumble and the like, so we thought it fitting to do something to support the
Hospice too.
“We had a fantastic time running the Rainbow Run together. It’s was great to do such a fun event with the whole family
to follow on my Nanna’s passion. I can remember how she used to always be asking us all to go into our cupboards for
donations that could be used for St. Clare’s Hospice raffles and tombolas.”
The family members who took part in the Rainbow Run included Lily’s two daughters, two granddaughters and their sons
who formed Lily’s Rainbow.
Our Day Care patients enjoyed a week-long
celebration to mark the 70th anniversary of VE
Day (Victory in Europe Day), since the end of the
second world war in Europe.
Many of our patients served their country during
the war, either on the front line or as nurses. Some
of our female patients were land army girls and
took to work whilst the men were away fighting.
