St. Claires Hospice - Annual Review 2015 - page 11

Business support is vital to our services
Our Corporate Partners, Members and local businesses have been busy as ever supporting our events and
holding some of their own as well. Thank you to all of you for your continued support!
In 2015, TSB in Jarrow adopted St. Clare’s as their charity of the
year and staff there are keen to support us. They will be arranging
a number of fundraising events this year including supermarket bag
packs and raffles in branch.
We were pleased to have four local businesses support our Rainbow
Run this year. Vic Young, L S Care, Fit 4 Less and Peter Johnson
Funerals all got behind the event by adopting colour stations and
providing volunteers to throw the powdered paint at the runners.
Employees from Peter Johnson Funerals and L S Care also took
part in the Rainbow Run themselves to help raise vital funds.
Peter Johnson employee Joanne Green, 37, from South Shields,
participated in the fun run for the second year and this time she ran
further by taking part in the 5k rather than the 1k. Joanne was joined
by her colleague Sam Baxter, 39, from South Shields, who loves to
keep fit and decided to sign up when she heard about how the funds
would help her local Hospice.
Employees from Premier Precision Engineering in Jarrow decided to
support St. Clare’s when they took part in the 10k Ultimate Warrior
Challenge at Leeds Bramham Park in June. The team started off in
their crisp white t-shirts which were unrecognisable as they were all
completely covered in mud when they had finished the 10k challenge.
Staff at Premier Precision chose St. Clare’s as some of the workers
had been personally touched by our work.
Thrift Energy Atlantic Challenge
Northumbria Police sergeant Sean McGuigan is preparing to take on the journey
of a lifetime when he rows the Atlantic to raise money for St. Clare’s Hospice and
the North East Alzheimer’s Society. On December 15th Sean, who is based at
Hebburn Police Station, and his new rowing partner Andy Warner will be setting off
to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean from the Canary Islands to Antigua in
the world’s toughest rowing race the Talisker Whisky Challenge.
Sean explained why he chose to fundraise for us: “As I work in the community I have
met several people who have been helped by St. Clare’s. I have seen first-hand the
massive impact that St. Clare’s has made to the lives of people in the area.”
Sean and his friend, Ian Spedding (pictured) currently hold the world record for the longest continuous stint on a rowing machine
– a remarkable 30 hours and 30 minutes. They also took part in a non-stop 12-hour rowing challenge at the opening of Hebburn
Central in June. Thrift Energy Atlantic Challenge aim to raise in the region of £100,000 which will be split between the two
charities. We wish Sean and Andy all the best with their challenge!
